When the U.S. withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in 2017, a new agreement was formed between remaining countries called the “Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).” Major U.S. trading partners have already ratified, including Japan, Vietnam, and Malaysia, resulting in tariff reduction or elimination of over 90% of traded goods, including agricultural products. However, because the U.S. is not a member, U.S. exports will struggle to compete and continue to lose market share to lower cost producers in other parts of the world.
